Support for healthcare services in the Altiplano

Main objective

Improving access to and the provision of services at health centres in the Altiplano region

Description

We were able to provide significant support to four municipalities in the form of equipment provision and awareness-raising.

Provision of healthcare equipment:
Portable medical kits specifically designed for maternal health and nutrition were assembled and provided to the remote municipalities of Escoma and Ayata to facilitate pregnancy monitoring, childbirth and newborn care. This equipment included, amongst other things, foetal Dopplers for performing ultrasounds, stethoscopes, scales, blood pressure monitors and small items (forceps, syringes and needles). The municipality of Pucarani also received small items of equipment (surgical scissors, forceps, syringes, blankets, etc.) for natural births and caesarean sections.

We purchased the missing equipment needed to set up a new physiotherapy clinic in the community of Vilaque (Pucarani). This clinic is located in a special needs school that was in dire need of equipment. The provision of this clinic now makes the work of the local physiotherapist much easier, as she can now visit the clinic without having to transport her own equipment on every visit.

Furniture (a two-section examination table, a screen, a gooseneck lamp and shelves) was purchased to furnish the GP’s clinic in Viacha so that she can receive and treat her patients more efficiently and comfortably.

The main signage at the Level 2 hospital in Pucarani has been updated to inform the public about the new services on offer. Two signage posters have therefore been designed to promote these services.

Screening and awareness campaigns:
Four screening and awareness campaigns (three focusing on eye health and one on physiotherapy) were carried out. A total of 173 people, including 110 women and 120 young people under the age of 18, were examined by four local professionals and received glasses and/or healthcare and advice.
