Development in Haiti

TSF implements a comprehensive development approach, grounded in a detailed understanding of local dynamics and the structural challenges faced by communities. The program focuses on stability, resilience and the strengthening of individual and collective capacities, taking a long-term perspective and working in partnership with local stakeholders. By building on local roots, capacity-building and access to essential services, TSF creates safe environments that promote inclusion, school retention and food security, whilst supporting sustainable pathways driven by the communities themselves.

Social cohesion and stabilization through the strengthening of essential services

TSF has set up a social stabilization program in the shantytown community of Croix-des-Bouquets, in the Port-au-Prince area, with the aim of reducing insecurity and social tensions. This program is based on access to essential services, such as drinking water and energy supply, combined with awareness-raising, community dialogue and violence prevention initiatives, particularly those addressing gender-based violence. This inclusive approach helps to secure educational infrastructure, strengthen social cohesion and foster sustainable ownership of the project by the local population. By working hand in hand with local stakeholders, trust is built between the team and the communities, ensuring a sustainable foundation, guided by shared values.

Community entrepreneurship to promote decentralisation

TSF is implementing a community entrepreneurship program aimed at empowering local people by developing practical and sustainable skills. The program is based on training trainers and sharing knowledge within communities, notably through community and school gardens, food production and processing activities, and communal kitchens. Short, practical workshops on agricultural production, literacy, IT and income-generating activities strengthen local skills and support youth engagement.

Agroecology and resilience in the face of climate challenges

TSF rolls out an agricultural component focused on agroecology and climate change resilience. The program combines practical training, seed support and regular guidance from specialists to provide sustainable support to farmers. Aimed in particular at communities with little prior experience of agroecology, this step-by-step approach has shown great potential for uptake. Community and school gardens, in collaboration with local academic research, encourage experimentation with more resilient crops and help strengthen food security.

Basic education

TSF supports basic education by providing a structured school environment that enables children to continue their education despite an unstable context frequently disrupted by political and security crises. This approach ensures the continuity of learning, the recovery of lost school years, and the maintenance of a secure educational routine. Improvements to infrastructure have made it possible to expand the provision of basic education and facilitate the transition to secondary or vocational education, thereby helping young people to stay in school. Furthermore, administrative work carried out in collaboration with school managers ensures transparency with stakeholders.

Education tailored to an unstable environment

In addition to mainstream education, TSF develops an alternative educational approach aimed at vulnerable young people and adults. This includes literacy programs, as well as courses that complement the state curriculum and are tailored to local circumstances. This flexible approach makes it possible to reach people excluded or marginalised from the traditional school system, to strengthen basic skills and to support learners’ independence, whilst promoting social inclusion and lifelong learning.

Health prevention and promotion

TSF works in the health sector through initiatives focused on prevention, awareness-raising and rapid response in crisis situations. Drawing on its team of experienced nurses, TSF carries out activities such as the distribution of drinking water, training in the production of hygiene and sanitation products, and training sessions on preventive measures. The program also includes medical consultations and support for specific vulnerable groups. These mobile and tailored interventions help to protect communities, mitigate health risks and strengthen community-based prevention mechanisms.
