Cholera Prevention and Control in the Wake of Hurricane Melissa
Reduce the spread and impact of cholera in areas affected by Hurricane Melissa through awareness-raising and prevention efforts.
Community Awareness
– Organizing training sessions for community leaders and health workers.
– Mass communication campaigns (local radio, role-playing, posters).
– Educational sessions in schools and public markets on handwashing and water purification.
– Distributing visual materials (posters, flyers in Creole) on cholera symptoms and preventive measures.
Prevention and Hygiene
– Distribution of hygiene kits (bucket with tap, oral rehydration salts (ORS), soap, water purification tablets (Clore or Jif, Aquatabs), graduated measuring cups in liters).
– Establishment of handwashing stations in the hardest-hit neighborhoods and temporary shelters.
– Promotion of handwashing, water disinfection, and the preparation of oral rehydration solution at home (1 L of drinking water + 6 tablespoons of sugar + 1/2 tablespoon of salt).
Medical Care
– Support for cholera treatment centers (CTCs) with medical supplies, oral rehydration salts, and antibiotics.
– Training of community leaders on the rapid management and referral of suspected cases.
– Informing the public about the various cholera treatment centers (CTCs) in their area.
Surveillance and coordination
– Establishing community alert committees to report suspected cases.
– Weekly collection and monitoring of case data.
– Regular coordination with the Ministry of Public Health and DINEPA.
