On November 14, 2008, volunteers with Chiropractic Without Borders (CWB) and Dentistes Sans Frontières (DSF) (Dentists Without Borders) orchestrated the first multidisciplinary mission to Guatemala.
The chiropractic team was made of Dr.Mélanie Leclerc and Dr. Julie Lepage, while the DSF team was composed of four dentists, two hygienists, two dental assistants and one gastroenterologist.
The first week of the mission took place in Champerico, a town on the Pacific coast. Helped by the team from Fondation du Père Armand Gagné, the chiropractors had the opportunity to treat the local population, especially infants aged between 0 and 3 suffering from severe malnutrition, living in a nutrition clinic. Mélanie Leclerc and Julie Lepage not only offered chiropractic treatments to the children, they also helped the staff with tips on ergonomics and neuromotor stimulation. The second week of the mission took place in the mountainous area of Tecpan, where the group contributed to a health and education sustainable development program developed by a Guatemalan doctor. The field partners were thrilled by the global vision of chiropractics. The people where this mission took place reacted positively to the preventive chiropractic approach. In fact, many contacts were made with for objective the establishment of a sustainable health project covering different sectors, in collaboration with Chiropractic Without Borders. The two chiropractors were happy with the results: “We see this mission as a pilot project where sharing experiences helped open doors and weave links”.
